Shamian Island, previously known as Shicui Sandbank, is situated by the White Swan Estuary of the Pearl River on the southwest of the downtown in Guangzhou, covering an area of 330mu. It is not a true island, but a sandbank on the Pearl River. It was a key post of commercial significance and a tourist site for merchants from both home and abroad in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. After the Opium War broke out, it became the British and French concessions in 1861 (the 11th year under the reign of Xianfeng Emperor in Qing Dynasty). It was also once an important trade port in Guangzhou. From the end of the 19th Century to the beginning of the 20th century, Shamian concession already had complete public facilities including consulates, churches, banks, post office, telegram office, trade firms, hospital, hotel and residence, as well as clubs, bars, pitches and swimming pools.
